Hojeggs
Hedgehog Houses
|
Gradual
loss of habitat means that life is getting more difficult for Hedgehogs
and many that do find somewhere to nest and breed often die on our increasingly
busy roads.
Hedgehog numbers are in decline and the species is at great risk, so
any help we can give will improve their chance of survival and stem
the decline. 'Hojegg' helps you to help them. This unique product is
made from recycled plastic fruit juice containers and covered with a
recently developed seed blanket. Made from Hdpe, they are very strong,
durable and require little maintenance.
To the Hedgehog it is a warm and dry refuge, safe from foxes, dogs and
cats - a perfect place to hibernate and rear young. The seed blanket
disguises the container, allowing it to blend in to its surroundings
with the distinct advantage of providing a living ecosystem. It contains
wild grass and flower seeds together with a growing medium to help gemination.

The
growing medium is absorbent to keep the seeds and young plants moist.
However, prior to germination the unit looks attractive with a natural
jute/hessian finish.
Eventually the jute composts down and disappears, leaving the plants
and their root systems covering the 'Hojegg' . Within 56 days the 'Hojegg'
will be covered with a variety of wild hay meadow species of grasses
and flowers, (97% of hay meadow and associated fauna have disappeared
since 1945).
The outer box increases in weight and bulk by 10 to 70 times, holding
the 'Hojegg' in place even in the most exposed sites and the covering
of vegetation also insulates the 'Hojegg' from the extremes of summer
and winter temperatures, keeping condensation to a minimum.
The hedgehog will find the 'Hojegg' entrance on its travels through
the undergrowth and will make its own nest inside using grass and leaves.
Hedgehogs frequently have more than one nest, moving between them during
hibernation. Several 'Hojegg' units located in a hedgerow present an
innovative opportunity to kick-start the regeneration of wild hay meadow
grasses and flowers in surrounding areas, which in turn will attract
other wildlife such as Skylarks and Song-thrushes, etc.
The main ecological attributes of the product include the use of recycled
materials, helping Hedgehog numbers increase and reintroducing wild
grasses and flowers to our countryside.
